Sewing Circle for Refugees and Asylum Seekers

It is a weekly drop-in for refugees and asylum-seekers, a project of Global Link DEC in partnership with Sewing Cafe Lancaster, funded by the big lottery fund.

What we do:

  • Mending: We offer lessons in basic sewing techniques, such as buttons, zips and pockets, using a sewing machine and cutting out, but, in practice, though we do meet a few novices, very many of the refugees and asylum-seekers are accomplished makers, embroiderers and tailors.
  • Community projects: such as banners for local groups or festivals.
  • Clothes distribution: Once a month the format and venue change, and we operate a clothing and household linen distribution session for asylum-seekers and refugees.
  • Sewing: people may bring along a project of their own to work on.

Whatever we are making or doing, our sessions are a lovely opportunity to make new friends, listen to each others’ stories, and to promote ideas around sustainability in textiles.
